The Smoking Land

This picture was taken from my hotel room window in Rotorua, New Zealand. The smoke is coming out from fissures in the ground: Rotorua lies in a seismically-active area and hot springs and geysers are common; kind of like a mini version of Yellowstone National Park.

It was neat to see the smoke coming from so close. Of course, having to smell the sulphur for the entire time that we were there wasn't quite so nice...

It does look a lot like Yellowstone. That means you are sitting on a kind of slow blowing volcano, doesn't it?

Or one that's gonna blow any second. Apparently Yellowstone is itself the caldera of a gigantic volcano, and that thing has blown in the past. And it's overdue for blowing again.

Insane, isn't it?

BTW, Yellowstone is a MUST-VISIT.

I was there once in the mid-80s. I was stunned when we drove into the paking lot and saw a bunch of elks muching on grass nearby. Didn't see any bear. But quite a few bisons. They don't seem to be bothered by our staring at them either.

The scenery was really awesome, of course.
